How to Measure

Measuring for made-to-measure blinds is easier than you think — a few minutes with a tape measure is all it takes. Follow the steps for your blind type, pop your sizes into the product page, and we custom make your blinds to fit perfectly.

The golden rules (read these first!)

Use a metal tape measure. Fabric or plastic tapes stretch and throw your sizes out.
Work in millimetres. All our ordering is done in mm.
Give us the exact opening size — do not take anything off. Our workroom makes all the necessary allowances so your blind operates smoothly.
Always write sizes as Width x Drop (W x D). Mixing these up is the most common measuring mistake.
Measure every window separately. Windows that look identical are often a few millimetres different.
Check twice, order once. Custom-made blinds are cut specifically for you, so sizes cannot be changed once production starts.

Step 1: Choose your fit

Recess (inside) fit — the blind sits inside the window opening for a neat, built-in look. Your window needs enough depth for the blind to sit inside without fouling handles or winders.

Face (outside) fit — the blind mounts on the wall or architrave and covers the whole opening. Choose this when your recess is shallow, or when you want maximum light blockout, since the extra overlap stops light creeping around the edges.

Roller Blinds (Essential, Viewscreen & Blockout)

Recess fit

Width: measure the opening at the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest of the three.
Drop: measure from the top of the opening to the sill at the centre of the window.
Check your recess is at least 60mm deep so the rolled-up blind sits neatly inside.

Face fit

Width: measure the opening, then add around 50mm each side so the blind overlaps the window. With architraves, the full architrave width usually does the job.
Drop: measure from where the top of the blind will sit down to where you want it to finish, allowing roughly 100mm above the opening for the bracket and roll.

Venetian Blinds (Basswood, Econo Wood & Aluminium)

Recess fit

Width: measure at the top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest.
Drop: measure at the left, centre and right. Use the largest.
Timber and Econo Wood venetians need a recess around 70mm deep; the 25mm aluminium needs less. Our workroom takes a small clearance off the width so the slats operate freely — do not allow for it yourself.

Face fit

Width: opening plus around 30–40mm each side.
Drop: opening plus roughly 100mm for the headrail above the opening.

Cellular Honeycomb Blinds (38mm)

Recess fit

Width: measure top, middle and bottom. Use the smallest.
Drop: measure left, centre and right. Use the longest, so the blind fully reaches the sill.
Cellular blinds have a slim headrail and suit shallower recesses — around 45mm of depth is usually plenty.

Face fit

Width: opening plus around 50mm each side.
Drop: opening plus roughly 80–100mm for the headrail.

Vertical Blinds (89mm & 127mm blades)

Recess fit

Width: measure the opening across the top — that is where the track sits.
Drop: measure at the left, centre and right. Use the smallest, so the blades hang free.
The track for our 127mm verticals needs around 50mm of recess depth.

Face fit

Width: opening plus 50–100mm each side for good coverage.
Drop: for floor-length blinds, measure to the floor and take off about 10mm so the blades swing clear.
